Title: Cadernos de inovação pedagógica.
Editors: Pacheco, Maria Isabel

A new generation of GEPs: how academic organisations address equality, intersectionality, and diversity

Title: A new generation of GEPs: how academic organisations address equality, intersectionality, and diversity
Abstract: Since 2015, the EU has been recommending and actively supporting the implementation of GE Plans (GEPs) in academic and research organisations. GEPs aim to address persistent gender inequalities in research and academic careers by moving along three axes envisaged by the European Research Area: i) to remove legal and other barriers to the recruitment, retention, and career progression of female researchers, ii) to address gender imbalances in decision-making processes, and iii) to strengthen the gender dimension in research (Council of the European Union, 2015). Despite the commitment of the EC to mainstream GE in research and innovation, the potential of GEPs to generate institutional and cultural change in universities is a contested matter. The use of efficiency arguments (e.g., economic outcomes of gender equality) to justify policy interventions and the predominance of conservative frameworks on GE to inform the measures are some of the critiques. Thus, current research and innovation framework programmes also refer to a gender+ strategy (e.g., intersectional approaches), meaning that gender remains the primary contemplated type of inequality. Still, its interaction with other sources of inequality and grounds of discrimination must be considered in the design and implementation of measures. RESET GEPs have aligned with this requirement and, from inception, have used intersectionality as an analytical tool for studying, understanding, and responding to the ways in which sex and gender intersect with other personal characteristics. This chapter will describe RESET partners' experiences designing, implementing, and mainstreaming intersectional GEPs, reflecting upon the barriers and challenges of gender mainstreaming in contemporary higher education systems.

LEARNING SPACES AND STUDENTS ENTREPRENEURSHIP: THE STRATEGY FOR THE SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF AN E-LEARNING CAFÉ IN CAMPUS U. PORTO

Title: LEARNING SPACES AND STUDENTS ENTREPRENEURSHIP: THE STRATEGY FOR THE SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION OF AN E-LEARNING CAFÉ IN CAMPUS U. PORTO
Abstract: Universities are facing demanding challenges due to the rising of life-long-learning needs and the responsibility to accommodate new and emerging technologies in the learning process. On the European Higher Education Area "learning" takes a primordial limelight. Also, in a globalized society where information and communication technologies play a major role, employers require higher education graduates not only to be excellent in communication and in the use of information, but also to think creatively, to be able to innovate, cooperate and compete across borders.
The spatial configuration of learning spaces and the facilities and initiatives they accommodate are rather important to provide effective environments for learning, where diverse studying and cultural activities combine, motivating students to become more knowledgeable and equipped with the interdisciplinary and high level skills the 21st century society requires.
The main objective of this work is to present and discuss the contribution of the e-Learning Café project of the University of Porto and of the successful implementation of its program, focused on diverse pedagogical and cultural activities, to the acquisition of students' attitudes and skills essential to handle professional relationships and to facilitate learning, personal development and entrepreneurship.

Research support at University of Porto libraries

Title: Research support at University of Porto libraries
Abstract: This case study describes the research support services provided by the libraries of the University of Porto (U.Porto). The university is composed of 14 teaching units (each with its faculty library), and each faculty has a wide range of research units. U.Porto has a high research activity, which compels libraries to keep pace with the evolving researcher needs, adapting and creating new services that respond to those requirements. From a global perspective, the overall mission of these libraries is to ensure and promote access to information resources made available by U.Porto to the academic and scientific community, both in physical and electronic supports. More specifically, this case will detail the services already provided in the context of research support, ranging from specialized training sessions in scientific publishing, reference management software, or search in bibliographic databases to the creation of thematic guides, support on the publication of scientific journals from within the university, and bibliometric studies.
Title: Synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering for the evaluation of the interaction of silica nanotubes with lipid membranes
Abstract: Synchrotron X-ray scattering measurements were used to assess the interaction of silica nanotubes (SNTs) with membrane model systems in conditions that mimic the physiological pH of healthy (pH 7.4) and pathological (pH 5.0) cellular membranes. SNT arrays were synthesized combining the sol-gel method with a porous anodic alumina (PAA) template assisted approach. The inner surfaces of the SNTs were functionalized with aminopropylethoxysilane (APTES). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the nanocarriers. A therapeutic anti-inflammatory drug (naproxen) was loaded into the SNTs by electrostatic interactions between the negatively charged carboxyl group of the drug and the protonated inner surface of the nanotubes. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements indicate that the unloaded SNTs do not interact significantly with both membranes. The negligible membrane disordering effect demonstrated by the unloaded SNTs may correlate with a desirable lack of membrane toxicity of these nanocarriers. Furthermore, the biophysical effect on membrane structure presented a similar profile at pH 5.0 for the drug (non-encapsulated) and for SNTs loaded with the drug indicating that SNTs are able to release the drug content under pathological conditions.
