Abstract: The noise levels made by clinical handpieces and laboratory engines are the main descriptors of acoustical comfort in learning spaces in a dental medicine school. The aim of this work is the acoustic characterization of five different teaching spaces at the University of Porto Dental Medicine School (FMDUP) by measure and analysis of the noise levels using the parameters LAeq, LAEP,d and NC. The acoustic environment in the practical classes is characterized by high noise levels (in general, between 61 and 88 dBA) that degrade the quality of these places for their main purpose regarding attentiveness and speech intelligibility.
The measured values showed daily exposure noise levels higher than the legal limits, which can make very possible the appearance of hearing loss with time. The reduction of these noise levels is then a fundamental objective to pursuit and some suggestions are presented to diminish up to 12 dB(A) the acoustic environment.

Title: In vitro evaluation of root canal transportation after use of BT-Race files
Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the effect of repeated use on the shaping ability of the BT-Race instrument.
Methods: Thirty-six canals in resin blocks were allocated into six groups. Glide paths were
flooded with alcohol while canals were prepared using a crown-down technique to a final
apical size of 35/.04. Pre- and post-instrumentation images were taken using macroscopic
magnifier, layered by PaintShop Pro9 software, and canaltransportation was measured using
Solidwork CAD 2014 in apical, middle and coronal levels. Data were analyzed using a General
Linear Model with a 0.05 significance level.
Results: When the number of uses only was considered, there were no statistically significant
differences in transportation (F = 0.453; p = 0.808). No statistically significant differences were
found in transportation in the interdependence influence of the locations and the number
of uses of the files (F = 0.746; p = 0.691). There were statistically significant differences in this
measure between the locations when all groups about number of uses (F = 22.358; p < 0.0005)
were considered. The largest measures were seen at five and seven millimeters from the
apex and the shortest ones in the apical area. The direction of transportation was toward
the outer side of the curvature in the apical level and toward the inner side in the middle
and coronal parts.
Conclusion: BT-Race file respects the canal morphology well and was safe to use repeatedly
with few incidences of transportation.

Title: Comparative analysis of the wear of titanium/titanium and titanium/zirconia interfaces in implant/abutment assemblies after thermocycling and mechanical loading
Abstract: Objectives: Due to its hardness, zirconia abutments may damage the titanium of the implant's connection during its clinical use. This study aimed to assess the wear of the seating platforms of externally hexed titanium implants when connected to zirconia abutments comparing to titanium abutments, after thermocycling and mechanical loading (TCML).
Methods: Six BNT (R) S4 external connection implants (Phibo (R) Dental Solutions, Barcelona, Spain) were selected and divided into two groups (n=3): TiCE, screwed to titanium abutments and ZrCE, screwed to zirconia abutments. The samples underwent thermocycling (5000 cycles; 5-55 degrees C) and mechanical loading (1.2 x 106 cycles; 88.8 N; 4 Hz). Before and after TCML, the seating platforms of the implants were analyzed by 3D profilometry in two areas to measure their topography based on the superficial analysis parameters (Sa and Sz) parameters, and were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically analyzed by Mann-Whitney test (p <0.05).
Results: No statistically significant differences were observed in the Sa and Sz values between the implants at initial state and after TCML (p = 0.573> 0.05 and p = 0.059). The abutment's material (titanium/zirconia) did not statistically significantly influence the Sa and Sz values after TCML (p = 0.886> 0.05 and p = 0.200, respectively). However, the SEM analysis reveals a mild wear in some vertices of the hex when connected to zirconia abutments.
Conclusions: After simulating five years of clinical use, the externally hexed implants, analyzed by 3D profilometry, showed similar wear patterns in the corresponding seating platforms when connected to zirconia or titanium abutments. The SEM images showed zirconia particles being transferred to the implant, which requires further study.

Abstract: Background: The purpose of this study was to compare oral health care (age of first dental visit, regularity and reason of visits, treatment of last visit) in a population with trisomy 21 and their siblings.
Methods: The sample was composed by 152 (63%) children with Trisomy 21 and 88 (37%) siblings of these children. They were observed in a pedodontics consultation, specifically created for this purpose, in the facilities of the faculty of Dental Medicine of the Universities of Porto and Lisbon. The information was obtained through a questionnaire made specifically for this purpose for parents or legal guardians. The analysis was made by using the statistical analysis program SPSS® v.14.0. A level of significance of 0,05 were considered.
Results: The median value of first dental visit children with Trisomy 21 was 3 years of age and their siblings was 5 years of age (p< 0.001). We verified that 50% of the participants visit their dentist at least once a year, not existing any difference between both groups (p=0.224). The main reason why children go to the dentist was to have a check-up (75%), being this the most frequent answer in both groups. The last treatments were preformed dental fillings in 24 children (9 children with T21 and 15 siblings), verifying a significant statistical difference (p=0.001). During the last visit, 5 children had endodontic treatment, all being included in the group of siblings, verifying a significant statistical difference.
Conclusions: Children with T21 visit the dentist at an earlier age compared to their siblings. There is no difference between both groups when comparing the number and regularity of dental visits. Children with T21 have less cavity treatments.
Keywords: Trisomy 21, Down syndrome, oral health care, dental treatment.
