Abstract: As adults, we often feel a nostalgic longing to recapture the primal spontaneity
of dreaming, experimenting, playing, and having fun. How can spaces be
designed in a way that can reclaim this fantasy seemingly lost in childhood and
where the user is not necessarily a child but can still play?
This exploration does not aim to intersect architecture with childhood in
order to return to it, but rather to propose its use as a theme for exploring an essential
connection with the creative process. This theoretical lense focuses on the
openness of the primitive act of "playing" and the use of "play" as the foundation
of a creative universe not infantilized but characterized by a playful approach and
a rejection of mere productivity, despite the seriousness implied by professional
practice. It presents the opening of a plural mental and physical space, not surrendered
to functionality, but open to imagination, adaptability, and, consequently,
to uncertainty, incoherence, and indefiniteness: spatial qualities that are usually
rejected.
From this perspective, this dissertation proposes observing architecture
through three related yet independently interpretable dimensions: the project in
direct association with the child - the school space as a starting point animated
by practical cases observed firsthand;3 the architect as a multifaceted figure who designs
through play allowing others to play - an exploration of the works of Aldo
van Eyck and Lina Bo Bardi, inserted in distinct contexts and whose playful vision
goes beyond the response to a school program; and the object dissertation treated as
a practical design exercise which, reflecting play as a personal driving force behind
design, aims to simultaneously be an open invitation to play.

Abstract: This dissertation explores the relationship between architecture and cinema through
the notion of architecture as a character in the films Bad Living and Living Bad, by
João Canijo, shot at the Hotel Parque do Rio in Ofir. This work proposes a reading of
the building beyond its condition as a mere background, understanding it as an active
presence that functions as a character in the construction of the cinematic narratives.
The research examines how architecture contributes to the development and represen-
tation of the storyline through the photographic composition of scenes.
Methodologically, the dissertation combines film analysis and theoretical reflection with architectural tools, such as axonometric drawings and perspectives, which allow for the interpretation and reconstruction of the filmed space. This approach is comple-
mented by visual essays that deepen the spatial and atmospheric reading of both the
films and the building, establishing a connection between analysis and practice. The
dissertation focuses on architecture as a character, arguing that in Bad Living and
Living Bad, the Hotel Parque do Rio acts with an autonomous narrative presence,
fundamental to the structure and intensity of the cinematic experience.

Abstract: This dissertation falls within the scope of the study of urban
transformations in the city of Póvoa de Varzim and the relationship
between territorial growth, mobility, and contemporary urban
structure. Based on the analysis of the city's historical evolution and
the consolidation of its main structuring axes, the study seeks to
understand how Via B, a recently implemented infrastructure located
between the EN13 and the A28, contributed to processes of urban
expansion, territorial fragmentation, and the reorganisation of the
relationships between city, mobility, and landscape.
In this context, Via B is analysed not only as a road infrastructure, but
also as an integral element of a broader urban structure, associated
with the urban growth processes of recent decades and with dynamics
of accessibility, land use, and functional specialisation of the territory.
Its intermediate and partially undeveloped condition allows it to be
interpreted simultaneously as a result of the city's recent
transformations and as a potential structure for urban and territorial
reorganisation.
The research was developed through an approach combining
historical investigation, territorial analysis, and design-based
reflection, seeking to establish a critical reading of the urban evolution
of Póvoa de Varzim and of the constraints associated with
contemporary urban growth. The project-based component of the
dissertation emerged as an instrument for territorial investigation and
interpretation, exploring hypotheses of urban rearticulation based on
principles of spatial continuity, integrated mobility, ecological
enhancement, and the qualification of public space.
The dissertation therefore seeks to contribute to the reflection on the
contemporary challenges faced by medium-sized coastal cities,
particularly in the context of the relationships between mobility, urban
expansion, ecological structure, and territorial cohesion.
acessibilidade, ocupação do solo e especialização funcional do
ecológica e qualificação do espaço público.

Abstract: This dissertation proposes the Molinological Route of Lousada (RML) as an
instrument of territorial and cultural cohesion, grounded in the concept of Dual
Valuation - Cultural and Ecological - of the mill heritage of the municipality of
Lousada, within the Tâmega e Sousa region. The research departs from a contradiction
observable in the territory: while the Romanesque Route stands as a
consolidated international heritage network, the more than 240 hydraulic mills
inventoried by the MUNHOS Project remain systematically absent from planning
instruments and existing tourism itineraries. The investigation demonstrates
that these structures are not vestiges of the past but latent territorial infrastructures,
endowed with demonstrated ecological, cultural and economic value.
The methodology combines GIS analysis, historical cartography, fieldwork
carried out in March 2026 and collaborative data from the Wikiloc platform, articulated
with the municipality's current planning instruments - in particular
the Operative Planning and Management Units (UOPG) of the Lousada Municipal
Master Plan. The combined application of three selection criteria - Ecological
Potential (A), Social and Heritage Viability (B) and Territorial Articulation (C) -
over the georeferenced universe enabled the selection of 21 mills, organised into
four complementary routes and hierarchised into Visit Points, Support Points and
a network of passive Safeguard Points.
The proposal articulates with the rural landscapes of the Mezio and Sousa
valleys, with the municipal green-blue infrastructure and with the Sustainable
Development Goals, demonstrating that mill rehabilitation can simultaneously
constitute a strategy for ecological regeneration, intangible heritage preservation
and responsible cultural tourism development. The governance model relies
on Shared Management Pacts, distributing responsibilities between the municipality,
private owners and the community without recourse to expropriation, and
on the application for the "Northern Routes" Seal as a condition of eligibility for
NORTE 2030 funding. The results confirm the initial hypothesis: the Molinological
Route of Lousada can be designed and implemented through existing planning
instruments, without requiring additional governance structures, revealing and
formalising pre-existing territorial continuities that the Romanesque Route documents
but does not traverse.
governamental, revelando e formalizando continuidades territoriais pré-existentes

Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyze the role of gastronomic culture in shaping the contemporary cultural fabric and its relationship with architectural space. Through a phenomenological perspective and an observational approach that bridges historical and contemporary analysis, the study recognizes the evolution of food practices as a reflection of transitional moments in customs and modes of inhabiting. Both physical structures (dining spaces and home kitchens) and the gastronomic practices developed in them and inherent to them are mentioned.
The analysis is projected across two levels of understanding: the pleasure of being-there, referring to meals taken outside the home within a social and exposed context; and the pleasure of being, inscribed within the domestic sphere, where daily repetition contributes to the construction of identity. Both panoramas are observed through a performative lens, understood in this study as a direct result of a bodily perception of space.
By recognizing Architecture as a discipline in constant contact with everyday needs, the study concludes that Gastronomy operates as a driver of architectural and cultural development. Thus, the observation and understanding of these practices are confirmed as essential for the proper design of space.

Abstract: The present dissertation draws primarily on a selection of material resulting from the expedition carried out by the Study Brigade for the Monuments of Portuguese India, drawn from the archive of Mário T. Chicó. The subject of study encompasses the findings of research into the art and architecture of the Portuguese-occupied territories in India, following the 1951 initiative and continuing until 1961.
The collection belonging to the art historian is part of the Mário Soares and Maria Barroso Foundation in Lisbon, under the name 'Mário and Alice Chicó Collection'. The body of archival material comprises a vast quantity and variety of documents, differing in both format and content. This research begins with the selection and cataloguing of material relating to the expedition to India. Building on a broad analysis of the collection as a whole, the study then turns the attention to the iconographic documentation resulting from the photographic survey carried out as part of the expedition.
The investigation delves deeper into the study of four representative examples, analysing them primarily through the photographic record, in direct contrast to the textual essays produced and published. This selection relates to a greater emphasis within the line of thought proposed by the expedition on the body of Christian religious architecture in Goa, with a view to understanding architectural forms in the Indian state. By contrast, other non-representative examples are considered, associated with less significant reference value.
The photographic documentation reflects a working methodology widely employed by Chicó in the development of research projects. Building on this argument, the study examines the remaining archival material, as well as evidence and information that enable connections to be drawn with various aspects of the subject matter and the approach employed.
A supplementary analysis of the photographic record is undertaken, both as an archival document and as the result of the work of a group of individuals specialising in different fields of knowledge. A reflection is proposed on the question of authorship, in terms of both individual and/or collective value.
Ultimately, the discussion turns to the construction of a theory linked to the complex of buildings representative of Portuguese-origin architecture in India, during and following the expedition, and to the documentation produced, in parallel with the surrounding context. The investigation proposes a comparison with the subsequent development of the study of history and architecture, which critiques the position taken regarding a conception of architecture in the areas in India under Portuguese occupation.

Abstract: The present dissertation started from a challenge by the advisor, Professor Doctor Arquiteto Luís Viegas, of imagining what it would be like inhabiting the future. This challenge generated the decision to develop a practical project of a House of the Future.
Imagining the future naturally involved trying to understand what it means to design for a reality we do not yet know, as well as, subsequently, attempting to establish the conditions that would allow for the development of such a project. Therefore, the act of inhabiting was subdivided into two intrinsically associated fields of force: a first field related to the Invariable forces, which are the human needs that remain constantly over time, and a second field consisting of the Variable forces, which are all cultural, social, and environmental transformations that occur over time.
In a subsequent phase, numerous works from the past were analysed in depth, works in which the design decisions made by their authors demonstrated concerns, needs and desires inherent to the time and context in which they were situated. Through a structure subdivided into seven periods, each associated with different functional characteristics, it was possible to create a line of continuities and ruptures that allowed the elaboration of a set of ideas about what is yet to come. At the same time, these analyses also allowed for the elaboration of a statement for a House of the Future, whose project to be developed would necessarily have to comply with these requirements.
Thus began the practical part of the dissertation, with the development of an experimental architectural project, conceived based on the previously defined premises, where the aim was to elaborate a solution that could be plausible, although hypothetical. As we have just mentioned and wish to emphasize, throughout this thesis, from the initial theoretical phase to the practical part, there was always a concern to ensure that the project here presented is not merely an exercise in fiction, but rather an informed and plausible response to the defined premises, albeit carried out in an experimental and innovative way.

In opposition to the paradigm of the tabula rasa, which tends to exclude pre-existence in favour of an autonomous design approach, the concept of tabula scripta, is proposed as a strategy of reading the existing ensuring continuity and adaptation to contemporary demands.
In order to deepen the research, a design proposal was developed for pre-existing structures located at the edge of the Serra da Peneda, in Arcos de Valdevez. The case study comprises a site with granite masonry structures, consisting of a residential and an agricultural building set whitin a landscape with a strong natural character. The territorial analisys reveals dynamics associated with the decline of the social and economic structures. In this sense, the study discusses how development strategies, in the face of abandonment and obsolescence, may contribute to updating its identity. This framework supports the proposal of a shared housing programme as a strategy for local revitalisation. In parallel, the first phase of Álvaro Siza Vieira's intervention at the home of Alcino and Zilda Cardoso (1971-1973; Moledo do Minho, Portugal) is analysed, with a focus on its design strategy, for its contribution to the central premise of this dissertation. The theoretical framework is structured around three main bibliographic axes: architectural theory and intervention; the rural context; and contemporary housing. On a practical level, drawing and model-making operate as tools for understanding the site, as well as methods for exploring imagined possibilities.

Abstract: The present dissertation takes the prison cell as its object of study.
Prompted by a personal concern following a visit to the Paços de Ferreira Prison,
the investigation tests the role of Architecture as a mediator between physical
confinement and human dignity, focusing on the minimum unit of involuntary
seclusion as the harshest and most severe limit of the human condition.
Aiming to understand how physical space shapes or conditions the
experience within a context of deprivation of liberty, the dissection of the
architectural cell is structured around three fundamental axes: Ethics, Aesthetics
(Est(ética)), and Technique. This tripartite methodological matrix, supported by the
secant planes of Gilles Deleuze's philosophy and Luís Viegas's epistemological
reflection, functions not only analytically but also as an operative working tool.
Ethics, being deeply conceptual, is concerned with the moral dimension of
confinement, defining a clear boundary between punishment and dehumanization.
Aesthetics (Est(ética)), anchored in the moral values defined by ethics, questions
sensibility, matter, and the impact of the physical limit on the human body. Finally,
Technique operates on a large scale, inserting the individual cell into the prison's
multicellular and collective dispositive, reflecting on the technical and functional
mechanisms that ensure the institution's security, surveillance, and control, as a
counterpoint to increasing technological dematerialization.
Drawing on a transdisciplinary approach supported by authors from various
fields, the process merges conceptual abstraction with the physicality of
architectural space, culminating in a return to its starting point through a practical
and critical diagnosis of cell 042 at the Paços de Ferreira Prison, which tests and
activates the grounded theoretical framework. Thus, it is concluded that
Architecture is indispensable as a disciplinary mechanism with profound
educational, sensitive, and operative responsibilities in safeguarding and
protecting the fundamental human condition.
sensibilidade, a matéria e o impacto do limite físico no corpo humano. A Técnica,
diversas áreas disciplinares, o percurso funde a abstração conceptual à fisicalidade

Abstract: At the turn of the twentieth century, the city of Porto underwent a process of urban
expansion and transformation associated with industrial growth and the consolidation of a
mercantile and financial bourgeoisie, which drove the progressive occupation of peripheral
areas and the reconfiguration of the relationship between centre and periphery. This process
of progressive urbanisation altered the landownership and social status of former rural
areas, promoting their valorisation and incorporation into new patterns of occupation
associated with the city's urban fabric.
This dissertation results from a research project centred on the architectural practice
of José Marques da Silva, a central figure in Porto's architectural culture, particularly
regarding the way in which he operated upon the city as a pre-existing reality. Through the
case study of Quinta de Serralves, in addition to analysing the strategies adopted within the
project, it is also important to understand the progressive transformation of a rural estate
of nineteenth-century origin into one of the most emblematic cases of twentieth-century
architecture in Portugal.
This process reveals a design logic that begins with an initial and contained
intervention aimed at the modification of an annex house. However, it gradually expands
towards the global reconfiguration of the entire ensemble, revealing a method of intervention
upon the existing based on continuity. In this context, it is also evident how the collaboration
with various contributors, including architects and international specialists, contributed to
the construction of a unified ensemble in which architecture, from the interior spaces to the
urban context and surrounding territory is articulated in such a way as to create a sense of
unity, establishing an intrinsic relationship between the house and the landscape.
No
intervenientes, incluindo arquitetos e especialistas internacionais, contribui

<summary type="text">Title: Healing Enclosure.
Abstract: This dissertation proposes a reading of the architecture of spaces
designed to support mental healthcare services centred on the needs of their
users and on the conditions of the surrounding context. Such spaces are not
approached as isolated entities, nor as mere representations of a functional
typology - in this case, the hospital or psychiatric institution -, but rather as
expressions of a fundamental relationship with the places in which they are
inscribed. Shaped by specific geographical, historical, political, and cultural
conditions, they are here understood as formal intermediaries between care,
landscape, and city.
Grounded in psychiatric hospital structures from the 1970s in northern
Portugal, the study discusses a set of concepts such as: enclosure, claustrum
and hortus conclusus, enclosed garden, type and heterotopia.
Through the notion of heterotopia, the hospital is framed as a
differentiated urban condition, negotiating inclusion and exclusion, openness
and closure, protection and exposure, within broader social systems. In parallel,
the idea of the enclosed garden informs the interpretation of therapeutic
landscapes as spatial thresholds, mediating relations between autonomy and
control, refuge and exposure, and reconfiguring the relationship between
hospital, city, time, and bodily awareness.
While rooted in specific local conditions - with the Psychiatry of
Bragança as both case study and site of architectural enquiry -, the research
aims to establish a project-based framework of reference. Starting from the
development of a solution inseparable from its context, the proposal advances
through a set of adjustable parameters, applicable across different contexts
and scenarios. In this sense, the site becomes a field of experimentation through
which transferable architectural knowledge is generated, allowing the proposal
to function as a framework for context-sensitive architectural practices.
hortus conclusus, o enclosed garden, o tipo e a heterotopia.
e controlo, refúgio e exposição, reajustando a relação do hospital com a cidade,
o tempo e a consciência corporal.
contexto.</summary>

Abstract: This dissertation is based on an analysis of the 1968 Standardized Study of Standard High Schools by architect Maria do Carmo Matos. Through two examples, the Padre Alberto Neto Secondary School and the Amadora Secondary School, it seeks to understand the effectiveness of applying a standardized design to current pedagogical, spatial, and social requirements. The research focuses on the study of the educational policies of the New State, in parallel with the international context, particularly in England, where Maria do Carmo undertook a work placement in 1966. This experience would have a strong influence on the projects and studies that she later carried out in Portugal.
In this way, the aim is to understand school architecture as a reflection of a political and social context, without devaluing the implications of the school space on the cognitive, social, and cultural development of its main user, the student. In this sense, the comparative reflection of practical cases, relating them to the standard project, will allow us to understand and expose the transformations of these buildings over time.
Ultimately, the aim is to emphasize the rarely appreciated work of architect Maria do Carmo Matos, who proved to be a leading figure in the field of school architecture at the end of the New State.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to study the potential of architecture in responding
to the needs for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident and
difficult to ignore. As the construction sector is one of the main contributors to
greenhouse gas emissions, and considering the current decarbonisation targets,
it becomes necessary to understand which strategies can contribute to mitigating
these impacts, which affect both territories and the daily lives of populations. At
the same time, it is equally essential to adapt buildings to the effects associated
with increasingly extreme climate events.
Climate change affects territories unevenly, with certain regions and
populations being particularly vulnerable due to socioeconomic, geographical
and demographic factors. The study of the rehabilitation of Porto's "Ilhas"
emerges within this context, as several of these housing clusters are currently
undergoing intervention processes. It therefore becomes relevant to question the
strategies adopted regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well
as to understand how these interventions may contribute to improving the living
conditions of the approximately 10,000 people who inhabit this housing typology.
The need to improve living conditions and reduce social inequalities,
combined with the urgency of reducing carbon emissions and promoting the
decarbonisation of cities, constitutes one of the central themes of this dissertation.
Considering the social and physical challenges associated with the "Ilhas",
it is essential to prevent the marginalisation of these populations due to their
precarious housing conditions. In this sense, the rehabilitation of these housing
clusters should be developed sustainably, balancing social and ecological needs
while serving as a possible reference for future urban rehabilitation interventions.
The "Ilhas" simultaneously represent two central issues: social vulnerability
and climate vulnerability. On the one hand, more vulnerable populations face
greater difficulties in accessing adequate housing, with housing and financial
precariousness increasing exposure to climate impacts. On the other hand, the
physical characteristics of these dwellings themselves increase susceptibility to
the risks associated with climate change.
This study aims to understand, in light of current sustainability targets,
how the rehabilitation of the "Ilhas" may contribute to climate change mitigation
and adaptation, promoting greater building sustainability and improved living
conditions.
Thus, this dissertation draws upon real case studies currently in the final
stages of rehabilitation, with the aim of understanding the strategies adopted and
assessing their suitability in addressing the identified challenges. Alongside the
case studies - Ilha da Rua de S. Vítor and six "ilhas" in Lomba - the dissertation
also reflects on the possibility of approaching rehabilitation from a broader urban
perspective, rather than focusing exclusively on the individual "Ilha".
regiões e populações particularmente vulneráveis devido a fatores socioeconómicos,
As ilhas representam simultaneamente duas problemáticas centrais: a
vulnerabilidade social e a vulnerabilidade climática.

<summary type="text">Title: Fiat Lux - Towards a narrative of the evolution of Light Design in Architecture and Urbanism
Abstract: The present dissertation essays an ontological relationship between
Light Design and Light. In establishing Light, for the Light
Designer, as being simultaneously medium and arch-medium, it
asks for an exercise engaging with determined theoretical traditions,
as well as delving in the tensions arising in-between them.
Firstly, the taxonomy in which the problem arrives begs for the
engagement with media theory - the axis formed by Marshall
McLuhan, in the 60´s, and Friedrich Kittler, in the 90´s, is employed
in the exercise as theoretical framework to think the roles
played by a medium and arch-medium.
Secondly, and directly stemming from the problem above, to reflect
on the dependency of humans upon technical apparatuses to
produce light. It forces the present exercise to discuss the agency,
or its lack, of the Designer over what mediates his production.
Heidegger and his notion of tecnhé are here employed as hinge to
retain the theoretical agency of the subject. In keeping the agency
of light employment in the subject, as opposed to the medium itself,
the exercise can then reflect on the modes of meaning available
to light, independently of what produces it. Umberto Eco and
his studies on semiotics serve as the investigatory pillar for the signification
dimension of light.
And thirdly, to reflect upon the disciplinary repercussions entailed
by the theoretical decisions taken. The conclusion reached
is that Light Design might be understood as a discipline governed
by three dimensions: the narrative - consisting of what the subject
pours into production; technicality - the dominium of the technical
artefacts producing light; and techné - the know-how articulating
the previous two.
produzir luz. Isto obriga o presente exercício a discutir a agência,
preservar a agência teórica do sujeito.
Umberto Eco e
as duas anteriores.</summary>

Abstract: A ruin, a project: between a persisting past and an adapting future
This dissertation proposes the rehabilitation of the former Alcohol Factory of Lagoa, an industrial complex from the late XIX century that endures as a testimony to the economic, social, and collective identity of São Miguel island.
Given the advanced state of abandonment and deterioration of the former industrial complex, the research develops a critical reflection on different approaches to industrial heritage, seeking to define strategies capable of reactivating a space now considered obsolete and derelict. The aim is therefore to develop a line of thought that culminates in a conscious and well-founded architectural gesture, capable of transforming the ruin into a living organism.
The methodological approach is structured around the convergence of place, theory, and design, understanding historical legacy and memory as elements that transcend the mere record of the past and become the foundations of architectural intervention. This articulation gives rise to a multifunctional proposal that, by taking advantage of the factory's monumental scale, establishes a socially relevant intervention fully integrated into the city's contemporary dynamics.
The project aspires to restore to Lagoa the centrality of a place once vital to the archipelago, and of an industry that, in the past, represented a beacon of progress and hope for an isolated people. Reflecting on the future of the former factory proves to be an essential exercise in material regeneration, demonstrating that architecture can act as a tool of mediation between a past that persists and a future that adapts.

Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the Boavista-Império Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, promoted by Metro do Porto, S.A, whose public tender was launched in July 2021 and whose experimental operation began on 28 February 2026.
The analysis is conducted from the perspective of one of the competing teams in the tender process, with no intention of providing an exhaustive assessment of the submitted proposal from a design standpoint, but rather to highlight a possible response to the competition requirements, raising questions about its adequacy and relevance in relation to the technical premises defined and the urban space the intervention traverses.
The work is organised around three complementary methodological axes, comprising the critical reading of the competition documents and the submitted proposal, the chronological tracking of the changes verified between the project put to tender and the executed intervention, and the analysis of the planning instruments and governance dynamics that framed the process.
The dissertation begins with the historical, morphological and heritage contextualization of the Boavista axis and Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa, followed by an analysis of the evolution of public transport in this corridor, from animal traction to light rail. The analysis of the competition process focuses on the competition documents and the submitted proposal, including a critical reflection on the programmatic options and alternatives (Proposal B). The post-competition chapter documents the changes verified between the project put to tender and the executed intervention, as well as its impact on the public and political sphere, through various news articles and institutional publications. The final chapter analyses the governance dynamics between the agents involved and the planning instruments.
This dissertation seeks to contribute to critical reflection on the processes of implementing public transport systems in public space, documenting the distance between planning intentions and the executed result, and questioning whether the introduction of a new means of mobility constitutes, or not, an opportunity for integrated urban renewal, through the analysis of the case study.

Abstract: Sheltering the human body, the premise that gives this dissertation its title, refers to
a principle common to both architecture and textiles. It is within this context that
this research seeks to explore the dialogue between the two and to understand
how textiles can be understood as architectural material.
The dissertation is structured around three complementary perspectives that seek
to understand textiles in their material, spatial, and sensory dimensions.
First, a set of fundamental concepts is gathered to help understand how textiles
relate to the origins of architecture and can serve as a starting point for its
definition. Of particular note is the perspective of the German architect and theorist
Gottfried Semper, whose reflection redefines the origins of architecture by
identifying textiles as one of its fundamental precursors.
Next, the reinterpretation of architectural elements through the lens of textiles is
explored, understanding textiles not merely as a complement but as a material
capable of spatially and functionally redefining the elements themselves.
Finally, through an examination of the works of artist Petra Blaisse, this study reflects
on the contribution of textiles to the construction of the sensory experience of
architecture, seeking to understand how textiles influence the perception,
atmosphere, and comfort of a space.
Textiles are thus considered in this work as a subject of analysis and representation,
capable of redefining the construction and experience of architectural space.
perspectiva do arquiteto e teórico alemão Gottfried Semper, cuja reflexão
a atmosfera e o conforto do espaço.

Abstract: This dissertation analyses the practice(s) of Family Architects as dispersed and
heterogeneous groups that seek to enable access to professional architecture in
vulnerable contexts. Starting from the recognition that regulated production of space
tends to remain inaccessible to populations with lower economic, political, and
cultural capital, the study aims to contribute to the dissemination of tools capable of
guiding future practices that seek to democratise access to architecture.
The research is based on two case studies - the Arquitectes de Capçalera (AC)
methodology and the Arquitectos de Família (AF) methodology - chosen for their
methodological relevance and the author's direct contact with both processes,
through the Taller Temátic Arquitectes de Capçalera 2021 (TTAC21) and the 5th
edition of the Arquitectos de Família Workshop (WAF#05). The work develops a
theoretical framework that situates these practices within the context of technical
assistance, emphasizing the impact of Rodolfo Livingston's "Método Arquitectos de
Família" and its dissemination and reinterpretation within Latin American Community Architecture.
The dissertation combines bibliographic analysis, critical observation of the tools
and processes adopted by the studied groups, and a comparative reading supported
by the SWOT02 model. This approach allows for the assessment of strategies for
territorial engagement, team organization, institutional coordination, and both
active (concrete interventions) and passive (training and research) outcomes. The
intersection of these dimensions highlights the challenges and opportunities within
intervention contexts, as well as the strategies to overcome and expand them.
The results demonstrate that there is no universal model for facilitating access
to architecture in contexts of deprivation, but rather strategies and tools adapted
to the specific conditions of each territory. It is concluded that socially committed
architectural practice requires a repositioning of the discipline based on active
listening, mediation, and collaborative action among professionals, institutions, and
communities.
Partindo do reconhecimento
no modelo SWOT01.

Abstract: This dissertation proposes a reflection on architectural intervention in
contexts of ruin and absence, based on the development of a proposal for
the intervention in the ruins of the Dr. Jerónimo de Lacerda Sanatorium,
in Caramulo. Built in the early twentieth century as the main structure
of Portugal's largest sanatorium complex, the building became one of the
principal symbols of the village's urban, social and landscape identity,
remaining, even after its partial demolition in 2022, a significant presence
within the collective memory of the place.
Its recent partial demolition intensified the reflection on the difficulty
of preserving large-scale heritage and on the role of architecture in the face
of physical loss. In this context, the dissertation explores the possibility of
intervening in a place where much of the built structure has disappeared,
yet where historical, symbolic and urban values persist, raising the central
question: how can absence be interpreted?
The research is developed through an analysis of the territory, the urban
evolution and the architectural identity of Caramulo, articulated with a
theoretical reflection on ruin and memory, and supported by relevant case
studies. The proposed programme seeks to respond to the village's current
needs, restoring dynamism and projecting a new future for a territory now
marked by abandonment. The intervention in the ruins of the Dr. Jerónimo
de Lacerda Sanatorium is therefore intended as a first impulse towards the
progressive reactivation of the remaining structures of the former sanatorium
complex.
Based on this framework, the proposal aims to demonstrate that
intervention in contexts of ruin is not limited to material preservation, but
may also constitute an opportunity to reactivate the place, valuing its past
while designing to the present, through a critical and sustainable approach to
architectural practice, established through a dialogue between architecture,
landscape and memory.
Neste contexto, a dissertação estuda

Abstract: The fantasy genre, whether in literature or cinema, is characterized by the construction of imaginary worlds inhabited by supernatural creatures, myths, and their own symbolic systems. It emerges as a response to modern rationalism, reclaiming mystery, enchantment, and subjectivity, offering readers and viewers not only an escape from reality but also an alternative way of understanding it. This dissertation aims to explore the relationship between architecture and the fantasy genre in cinema, analyzing how architectural spaces help to construct imaginary worlds and lend them credibility. The thesis begins with a theoretical reflection on the concept of fantasy, its subgenres, its historical evolution, and how cinema has appropriated and visually translated this genre through architecture-understood here not merely as decorative background, but as an active and structuring narrative element, capable of expressing cultural identity, symbolism, and emotion. In the second section, the focus shifts to a central case study: the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, particularly the universe of Middle-earth, both in its literary form and in Peter Jackson's cinematic adaptation. Finally, in the third section, through the comparative analysis of three architectural spaces, the dissertation seeks to demonstrate how architecture, in these fictional worlds, becomes a silent character, revealing the qualities, values, and mythologies of the different races represented.
